The Greeks thought that love is a universal phenomenon and called it “Agape.” It is unconditional, unchanging and never goes away, even if we don’t do anything to deserve it. Moreover, it exists in all things, and is often described as parent love. Babies are viewed by their parents as the embodiment of Agape love.
Though there are no clear-cut definitions of love, psychologists say that it can take many forms. It can be a feeling of unconditional joy, an uncontrollable feeling of deep affection, a desire to be with someone, a longing for a new job or a dream promotion, or an emotional attachment to a favorite sports team. However, each of these definitions of love may be accurate to some extent.
The emotion complex view of love recognizes love as a complex emotional attitude towards another person. It articulates the emotional interconnections between people and avoids the extremes of the union view and the rigid teleological focus of the robust concern view. This view emphasizes the complex nature of love, and eschews overly reductive and reductionistic concepts.
In addition to being a powerful emotion, love involves a conscious choice. The impulse of liking and disliking is often controlled by impulse, but the conscious choice to love means choosing to commit to a relationship. This allows the intellect to rise above the irrational emotions and keep the relationship alive. In addition, if the two people are emotionally compatible, it will be easier for them to get along.
Another common way to understand love is to consider it as a creative process, which involves a creative response to value. If love is creative, it doesn’t rely on appraisal, which is the basis of all social relations. In this way, love does not respond to antecedent values. This is why it has a different meaning than a purely utilitarian, rational, or rational response to value.
Love is an emotional state of being that lasts for a long time. It involves the feelings of passion and intimacy. Love involves time, trust, and acceptance. Love requires a long time to develop. This is because it involves two people getting to know each other. If both parties are emotionally connected, love will be evident in the relationship.
Contemporary views of love can confuse these three kinds of love. Nevertheless, ancient Greeks distinguished between them. As such, there is a wide spectrum of love. Some theories of love blur the distinction between eros and agape. And there are some who consider love a conative relationship between two autonomous agents.
